What You Need To Know About Cervical Fusion December 18th, 2011

Cervical fusion is the process of bringing back the alignment of your spinal column. There are reasons why cervical spine undergoes surgery. Herniated cervical disc, spinal stenosis and bone spurs are some of the causes of cervical spine injury. Some neck disorders require you to have cervical fusion to prevent further spinal damage. To know more about this process, you need to understand first the normal anatomy and physiology of your spine. Any discrepancy that will put your life into danger must undergo surgery immediately. A radiculopathy on the other hand refers to one or more nerves that do not function properly. This can lead to numbness, weakness and difficulty in moving specific muscle groups. Upper body paralysis can cause a deterioration of normal respiratory mechanism. You need to know the symptoms of cervical spine disorders so that proper intervention will be given as soon as possible.

Your cervical spine is on your neck area or the upper portion of your spinal column. It consists of seven interlocking bones which are being kept together by an intervertebral disk. This disk serves as the cushion which protects the vertebrae. It is also the one that keeps the vertebra in place as well.
These disks are composed of spongy material called nucleus in the center. A thick ring which covers the whole disk is called annulus on the other hand. The annulus is the one that keeps the nucleus in perfect form. This spongy substance is the primary shock absorbing tool of your neck whenever you experience an accident. It prevents vertebra from rubbing each other thus protecting the condition of your spine. Intervertebral disks are also important in motor functions such as turning your head.

A bone arc is on the back of the vertebra which is known as the spinal canal. This is place where you can find the nerve bundles and spinal cord. The cerebrospinal fluid is a protective membrane that coats the spinal cord as well as the spine and the brain. A foramen, on the other hand is small aperture that serves as the path of spinal nerves. These nerves are responsible for transferring nerve impulses from the different parts of the body to the brain. When it comes to the cervical spine, some of the important body organs that exit through this spine are the shoulder, arms, neck and hand.

Cervical Fusion is done to alleviate the pain in the nerve roots of the spine. It is the process of putting two or more vertebrae in place by fusing them together.  This procedure prevents any additional vertebral motion that consequently diminishes the pain felt in the affected area. If you want a less invasive disk repair surgery, the laser spine surgery is available for you. Laser spine surgery involves the utilization of laser in cutting tissues instead of a typical surgical instrument.
